Early risers and supporters of Vista took part in a 5K challenge at 5:30am on Friday 7 July, raising over £2000.

Sunrise City saw a wave of runners completing the route around Leicester city centre, starting and finishing at Victoria Park.

Almost thirty runners were part of Team Vista, which consisted of members of the public, supporters such as Grant Cotton (Mr Leicestershire 2017), Vista employees, and people supported by the charity, including two residents from New Wycliffe Home.

Peter, 86, and Molly, 76, successfully completed the route with the guiding assistance of Julie Rudd, Manager of New Wycliffe Home. Prior to his sight loss, Peter was a keen runner who has completed several full marathons, and still enjoys keeping active. Molly, who is living with dementia, chose to take part as she wanted to raise funds for the home.

Julie Rudd said “Peter and Molly are absolutely over the moon about what they have achieved. Molly was just marching ahead, and Peter enjoyed the event so much that he wants to do it again!”

She added “Guiding them around the city centre really put me in their shoes, and made me aware of the obstacles that people with sight loss can face whilst getting around. Peter and Molly should be so proud of their achievement, as we believe that vision loss shouldn’t prevent them living their lives however they wish to.”

Becky Poole, Community and Corporate Fundraiser at Vista, said “It was lovely to have a big team of runners, including people who use Vista’s services, taking part in order to raise vital funds for the charity. The money raised will make a real difference for local people with sight loss.”
