Vista changes lives. We are the leading local charity working with children and adults with sight loss in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
We’re looking for Digital Buddies to support people with sight loss by helping them find out more about technology. They will advise and train the people we support in the use of technology and equipment.
This involves supporting people who have limited experience with a computer, who will need training and support that will promote independence, social inclusion or improve their lives.
The level of support provided will vary from person to person – some may require a brief intervention to help them overcome one particular difficulty they are experiencing, whilst others with less technological experience may need long-term support as they build their computer skills.
Helping service users with the basics – sending emails, browsing online, filling in online application forms, using social networking, skype etc.
Activating and optimising the accessibility features or settings on devices
Downloading and using newly developed apps that can benefit people with sight loss
Using additional accessibility equipment effectively (such as screen readers and digital magnifiers)
Pass on IT skills to people on a one-to-one basis
Helping service users with setting up software, internet safety and security
Offer informal advice on keeping safe online eg. Guarding against identity theft, phishing and scamming
All Digital Buddies will:
Keep an accurate record of volunteering activities and share this with Digital Buddy co-ordinator
Maintain confidentiality of service user’s personal information in line with Vista’s policies and procedures
Communicate regularly with the project co-ordinator
Attend a Digital Buddy training session if required
Report any concerns to project co-ordinator
- Attend training sessions.
Qualities and skills we are looking for:
Good verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to explain things in simple terms without too much jargon
Confidence with a computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone
A good understanding of online basic skills
A sociable, caring and patient personality
Organisational skills and reliability.
Some Buddies may have (but it’s not essential):
A knowledge of all Operating Systems
Ability to use different forms of social media.
What resources and help is there for Digital Buddies?
