Looking after children’s eyesight is vital, both for their learning and their overall wellbeing. Vista’s Primary School Eye Health Programme helps children understand the importance of taking care of their eyes and builds awareness of sight loss from an early age.

About the programme

We work with local schools to deliver engaging sessions for 4–5 year olds, using storytelling, drama, yoga, and puppetry to explain:

  • How vision works
  • How to look after their eyes
  • How people with sight loss manage in everyday life

The programme fits within the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 areas of the National Curriculum, including Personal, Social, Citizenship, and Health Education.

Children learn in a fun, interactive way, with activities designed to help them understand themselves, celebrate differences, and appreciate the importance of good eye health.

Why it matters

  • Good eye health supports learning at school and at home
  • Children’s eye tests are different to adults’ and can be carried out before they can read
  • Early awareness can help prevent avoidable sight loss later in life

Our approach

The programme has been developed in partnership with Parmjit Sagoo, Drama Practitioner and Creative Learning Specialist, who has over 15 years’ experience using creativity and movement to support wellbeing, personal growth, and social change.
