Rights and Entitlements
Living with sight loss can affect many areas of life — from finances and travel to work and education. Knowing what you’re entitled to can help you get the most from the support available.
While Vista does not process benefits or legal claims, we can guide you towards the right information and organisations to make the process easier.
Benefits and financial support
You may be eligible for benefits such as:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – to help with extra costs if you have a disability or long-term health condition.
- Attendance Allowance – if you are over State Pension age and need support due to sight loss.
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) – if your sight loss affects your ability to work.
- Universal Credit – if you are on a low income or out of work.
We can help you understand eligibility criteria, gather the right paperwork, and signpost you to agencies who can help with applications and appeals.
Concessions and discounts
If you have a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), you may also qualify for:
- Concessionary bus travel or rail discounts.
- Reduced or free TV licence.
- Blue Badge parking scheme.
- Tax allowances, such as Blind Person’s Allowance.
We can point you towards local authority departments or national organisations that manage these schemes.
Your rights at work and in education
Under the Equality Act 2010, employers, schools and universities must make “reasonable adjustments” to ensure you are not disadvantaged because of your sight loss. This might include accessible materials, specialist equipment, or flexible working arrangements.
We can signpost you to support services, advocacy organisations, and legal advice if you have concerns about your treatment at work or in education.
