Vista's travel guide for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland

Published on 18th January 2023 in General

In Spring 2022 Vista was granted funding from the Department for Transport as a pilot project in their “Tackling Loneliness with Transport” programme. With this funding Vista is carrying out several pieces of work to try to improve the accessibility of local transport for people affected by sight loss.

The first part of this project is to provide information on local transport options to people who are registered as sight impaired/severely sight impaired or who have been in receipt of Vista’s services. This information has been produced in different formats – large print, XL print, XXL print, braille, audio and email, to ensure it is accessible to as many people as possible.

The information covers travel by bus, train, Direct Response Transport (DRT), community transport, taxis and walking. We hope it is useful to you, provides information you may struggle to find elsewhere and makes access to local transport a little easier for you. We will also provide this information to people who are added to the register over the coming months.

The next part of this project will work with local transport providers so that they can better support people affected by sight loss, with training videos and events. In Spring 2023 we will be allocating £200,000 of funding to local transport hubs to make small changes to improve their accessibility – from talking bus stops to improved signage.

We would love to hear whether this information is useful to you, so please taken a few minutes to complete our feedback form. You can also use this form to let us know of a local transport location you think we could improve in the next stage of the project.
